I will be joining forces with Katt McConnell on Saturday, October 2nd, to go busking in Broad Ripple. We will more than likely be somewhere near the Rainbow Bridge on Guilford Avenue, or we’ll find a cozy spot along the Monon where we’re not too in the way. If you come looking and don’t find us right away I’d suggest wandering around the Ripple and following the sound of the Super Seagull guitar… or the lovely fiery-haired soprano making all the passers-by swoon and stuff.

We should be getting there by around 3:00pm but might not be set up and actually playing/singing until around 3:30pm to 4:00pm. We’ll stick around probably until we’re tired, we’ll see. This is kindof an experiment so it’s tough to say just what will happen. And of course if there is a big horde around us we will probably be in the way of other folk trying to get from one place or another and get into trouble, so please feel free to come by and say hello if you happen to be in the area (or if you’d REALLY like to PUT yourself in the area, that’d be awesome), but please be respectful of the neighborhood and try not to treat it like the street is a concert hall. ;) We don’t want to be pests. =)

Also if you’d like to assist in carrying things or help hand out flyers for the show on October 8th please feel free to email me. Again, I don’t want to have a horde of people hanging out on the street and we will have very specific rules about how things are to be distributed so as not to get into any trouble with the locals, so please be respectful of that. There’s a fine line between busking and panhandling/soliciting and I’d REALLY prefer to stay on the busking side of it.

Hope to see you there, at least in passing!

Much love,

I'm glad you're organizing it ^_^ Like you said, if I wait until I'm not busy it probably won't happen :P

I think it's totally gonna be a blast. Regardless of how it goes. Even if they chase us off the bridge and send us scampering off with our instruments with our tails bouncing behind us... at least we'll have given it a decent shot.

And then of course we'll have to try it someplace else! Bwa ha ha ha ha. ;)

Frankly I'm pretty excited about hearing more of your stuff, lady!

Thanks, though I seem to be having some of the same problem you are. I mean yeah, my stuff is pretty good as far as filk goes, but I'm feeling the urge to write differently....I'm just not sure how to do so.

Hm. Well I've not heard a TON of your stuff but I would venture to say that it isn't JUST good Filk, it's ALSO good Folk. I would love to sit down with you and listen to what you've got, but my suggestion quite honestly is that if you want to WRITE different stuff, the best thing to do is to LISTEN to different stuff. How ecclectic are you? Do you ever listen to, say, Pandora Radio or Various "mix it up" places on the internet where you can throw in what you DO like and find more stuff that you don't KNOW? Listen for female folk musicians, there are tons out there. Pop definitely has Jewel, Fiona Apple, Tori Amos, and Charlotte Martin to offer. Start roaming around town and finding the Indie bands, and just listen to what they're playing. Hunt and hunt and find things that you like that AREN'T "just Filk" and trust me, it'll be inspiring.

The other thing is to be willign to write about ANYTHING. If you have any wayward thought that you think, off the cuff, "I could write a song about that", where you would NORMALLY say something like "Mm, I dunno, I don't know if I could make it work", WRITE IT DOWN. Sit down with it when you have even five minutes and play with it. put different rhythms to it. Sometimes, you won't come up with anything that you like. But you're only going to write more stuff if you TRY to write more stuff, and recognize that sometimes you're going to fail at writing the things that randomly occur to you but you WILL come up with things that are awesome. I wrote "How To Be A Superhero" as I was driving home listening to Fiona Apple's "Extraordinary Machine" (which I was SOOOO pumped to hear S00j cover!!!!!!!!! *squee* I FRIGGING LOVE THAT SONG). As I was listening to it I thought of someone in particular, but it didn't quite fit.. it was a little too mean and/or detatched for my thoughts toward said person... and so I started putting together words that fit better. And boom, a "costume with some velvet and a touch of slut" was born. ;) But I have just as many moments when I'll sing something into a digital recorder to go back to later, and not find ANYTHING I can conceivably do with it. Or write a poem or a line that doesn't go anywhere. I had several people tell me that I should put the poem "Peanut Butter" to music, and I tried... but no matter what I did it sounded terrible... so it stays a poem. *shrug* It is what it is.

I want to say that I want to write "like Sooj", but then I don't want to say that because it might be taken the wrong way. What I mean is that I'd like to get away from the style of filk that seems to be so ingrained in my mind.

Stylistically, at least compared to what I grew up listening to, Sooj does not write filk. She's a folk artist, with a healthy touch of lots of other stuff thrown in where necessary for good measure. She's not nearly as niche as filk is....and I want to write like that. I just need to figure out how to do that, because, for some reason, I keep telling myself I'm not a good songwriter.

So basically I'm having some growing pains. I feel like it's time to leave the musical cocoon I've been hiding inside for years and years, but I'm not sure how to go about tearing down the walls.

Sing your songs for people. Some won't comment 'cause they don't know what to do with songs without instruments, but try other folk. As people continue to tell you "Dude, that sounds AWESOME" you'll get more confidence. Sing what you have, the response you get will help.

So basically, what you're doing. ;) I think you're a damned good songwriter, and I don't impress easily. Nor do I try to flatter. And you're my friend so one could say I'm biased, but how I feel about you personally has no real bearing on how I feel about your music. Granted I'd be willing to give it more of a CHANCE if I know you, but I'm also a music snob.

Thank you : ) That means a lot. Especially as I know it really isn't in your nature to lie to people.

Nope, I suck at lying to people. If I thought they were terrible I just wouldn't say anything.

(which is not to say ever that if I don't say anything about a song, I don't like it. Sometimes I get distracted before I get a chance to express a good squee).

Awesome ^_^

Oo, BTW, Liz says she's in. But I have no idea about anything other than that--if she'd be riding with us, when she'd be leaving, that sort of thing.
