Yep... having READ the "Left Behind" books and having listened to the campaign ads, I've been wondering when this stuff would start.

Is Obama the Anti-Christ? 

So I can't really say that I'm SURPRISED, but I can say that I'm ashamed.  Because I probably have personally known people in my life who will buy into this.

And why shouldn't they?  They bought into the Left Behind books, all of the rhetoric about Wiccans being Satan worshippers and Occultists being possessed by demons, and will follow charismatic preachers who are willing and able to twist the Bible into whatever picture fits their personal beliefs and fears.

And don't start acting self-righteous if you disagree with this nonsense, because even if you aren't a Jenkins/Lahaye follower, you can STILL find Bible verses that support the idea of Obama being the anti-Christ.  

'Course, you can also find Bible verses that support the idea of Kennedy, Martin Luther King, George Washington,  Abraham Lincoln, and a variety of other charismatic world figures being the anti-Christ.

And don't even get me started on the current president of France, whose name alone could qualify him for "evil villain" status by Revelation standards.

Yeees it's started.  The "end of the world" craze that has surrounded every major political happening since The Holy Bible was canonized.  

Behold, ladies and gentlemen... the beauty of superstition.

Yeah, wow, I don't know if I can even make myself click that link. It makes me shudder. You can pretty much find Biblical support for *anyone* to be the anti-Christ.

I think that's why I don't get terribly worked up over shit like that anymore. Except that this is pretty clear defamation of character.

Wow, I actually did click the link, and now I'm creeped out. I didn't know that the source of the article was a McCain-sponsored ad. I'd expect this to be the kind of thing you find in internet mail-arounds.

Uuuuughl. Yeah, I think I have to agree with the people in the TIME article. There's no way that was just a funny/mocking ad about Obama thinking he's the Second Coming.

*nods* The creepy part is where they take bits from his speeches out of context. Have you ever read the Left Behind books? It's a fairly clear comparison to the anti-christ character painted there.

The comparison isn't creepy. That comparison can be made from any number of political speeches throughout history. The creepy part, is the level that the McCain campaign sunk to, and the direct targeting toward religious conservatives and endtimes fanatics.

not necessarily every religious conservative, because I know religious conservatives who would scoff at the add. But a particular kind of religious conservative.

It's just... eerie. Maybe more eerie that whoever came up with this ad, knows that camp so well.

No, I've never tried to read the books b/c I fear they'd just make me angry. But the TIME article makes a pretty compelling comparison.

I guess the creepy part to me is your last line -- I'd expect people to make this assertion. I wouldn't expect the McCain campaign to sponsor an ad that encouraged it.

I was wondering when someone would suggest that. I admit I thought of it offhand once. I started reading the books, and stopped at book 4 when I started dreaming in Hebrew. Heehee. I'd like to finish the series, just to finish it. I started reading the series because my husband's grandparents gave them to me.

*nods* I stopped reading it because I got tired of the constant cliffhangers. It just felt gimmicky. And that was back when I was still a fundamentalist.
